DESIGN WITH PURPOSE

The Cabins at Walden Monterey were created to serve as temporary structures that enable residents, designers and guests to experience the land and homesites within 60 days of becoming a resident.

Understanding that the best way to connect with nature is to spend time with it; Walden Monterey provides the following sustainable structures to promote an immersive design experience for its residents and their future permanent homes.

DESIGN WITH PURPOSE

Understanding that the best way to connect with nature is to spend time with it; Walden Monterey provides the following sustainable structures to promote an immersive design experience for its residents and their future permanent homes.

KITHAUS

Walden Monterey’s first cabin. kitHAUS designs and delivers modernist pre-fab modules that transform open spaces into anything-you-want structures –– Although the immediate use case will serve as escape pods for residents to immediately experience their homesite and inspire the design of the permanent home, it can easily be converted into a yoga studio, home office, writer retreat, guest room, country cabin, or simply removed once construction is complete.

You dream it. kitHAUS builds it –– custom-configured, on site, in days, tie-grid or off-grid.

DFA ARCHITECTS

The Galini Sleeping Pod for Walden Monterey builds on DFA’s experience envisioning one-off solutions for environmentally sensitive or challenged sites, in addition to its expertise integrating urban, architectural and interior design. The Galini Sleeping Pod is designed as a fully self-sustaining, zero impact structure. The 300-square-foot sleeping accommodation with shower, sink and toilet can be shipped to remote locations and placed in the landscape with very little impact on the site natural system. Four legs covering 13-square-feet in total suspend the pod off the ground allowing for plants and animals to not be displaced and exist beneath.

Drawing its water supply from an atmospheric water generator and recycling all wastewater by means of organic filtration, the pod has no impact on the local environment and local water table. The electrical supply is generated through the combination of both wind and solar technology. Galini’s structure is 97% waste efficient in its construction through the use of 3D printed technology, consisting of a Carbon Fiber Infused Bio-Material that can be skinned in various materials according to needs. DFA has worked alongside Branch Technologies, out of Tennessee, to develop the 3D printing Structure.

THE CABINS at WALDEN MONTEREY
Building off of a net-zero approach to living and becoming more grounded in a natural ecosystem, The Cabins at Walden Monterey allow for intermittent dwelling as well as prolonged enjoyment of the landscape, as the formal and long term plans for the environment begin to take form.Focused on an efficiently crafted footprint grounded in container based construction, and with little more than 1 bed and 1 restroom, the initial options presented below delve deep into varied responses to the idea of a modern cabin and what an elegantly but simple and crafted space in the special location that is Monterey, has the potential to offer. Investigating different spaces, different exposures, and different ways of cabin living, SOLITUDE, 2Y2M2D, and CHAPARRAL each bring a unique approach to a new and exciting opportunity that pays homage to Thoreau’s treatise and an opportunity for deliberate living.

SOLITUDE

CHAPARRAL
SOLITUDE

A simple space for simple pleasures. An opportunity to focus on the idyllic surround-ings and return to the aspects of life that bring peace, joy, and serenity. SOLITUDE strives to place the emphasis of all views, all moments, all interactions – of the time spent at Walden Monterey, in taking in those unique and rejuvinating pleasures.

At merely 320 square feet, this modern and simple cabin is constructed from time tested materials with a local shift. A steel frame shipping container is modified with butt joined glazing, folding glass doors, charred Monterey cypress clad planters and brows, and a mirror clad suntunnel that funnels to a substanial interior skylight.

This calm and peaceful room provides renwed experience of what nature affords. By taking notice of a landscape reflected in a polished steel headboard, or gazing upon the starry night sky through the crafted openings, SOLITUDE connects occupant to nature and simply embraces those willing to return to a life of simple enjoyment.

2Y2M2D

Surrounded by the transcending Monterey topography and inspired by acres of untouched beauty, 2Y2M2D is a modern cabin designed to bring this gentle landscape inward and create opportunity for thought, relaxtion, and contemplation.

This 320 square foot cabin is constructed from the strong base of a modified shipping container and further crafted with warm, natural materials both inside and out. Strate-gically placed sliding doors, operable windows, and custom skylights allow for views of the undulating meadow and provide constant contact with nature for a rewarding and enriching stay.

Along with its soft impact on the environment, 2Y2M2D contributes to its beautiful site by allowing for one precious native species to be planted by the owner and allowed to grow through, and become part of, the cabin nestled within Walden Monterey.

Chaparral

Created for those seeking opportunistic outdoor living and the ability to adapt to seasonal changes, CHAPARRAL is a cabin meant to unfold and react to the wants, wishes, and desires of its occupants. Covered trellis elements, telescoping window walls, multifunctional storage, and platforms that extend the living space beyond the boundary of the cabin intertwine for a space meant to serve indoor and outdoor living.

Constructed from one 8′ x 40′ shipping container cut and reconnected, the interior finishes and paired materials assist in blending the 320 square foot cabin to its envi-ronment and still allowing for unencumbered freedom.

ROVING ROOM

The Roving Room was designed by Architect and Master Developer Alan Williams, to allow home sites to scale for guests while minimizing resources needed to accommodate them. It is a temporary and sustainable structure created to supplement a primary home and allow new home buyers to experience every corner of their property during the design and imagination stage.

The structure was inspired by the first Gathering at Walden Monterey and is completely mobile.

WALDEN CABIN 2.0

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach…” – Henry David Thoreau – 1854

Walden details Thoreau’s experiences over the course of two years, two months and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond. By immersing himself in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of simplicity and his surroundings, and objective that is the foundation of our mission.

Walden Cabin 2.0 is our modern take on HDT’s cabin. Rather than scavenging for materials, we imagined a structure which is composed of only recycled ones, that can harness the power of the sun to operate only our most simple needs.
